Mar 13, 2011 - Make sure that you are performing the correct SMC for your machine. But Mac's and PC's have self-powered USB ports that are powered. Are you sure the USB ports themselves aren't working? It may be a controller on the board, or the circuit 'surrounding' it. You need to trouble shoot those first. If you can determine that nothing is wrong, you then move on to replacing the ports themselves. Won't be an easy task since they are anchored very strongly and improper technique may damage (burn/flex) the board. Of course you can send it out for repair, but then again you could be spending as much as the cost of a new board or even a used laptop. After all it is a 5 years old machine, so you need to weigh your options. If you have experience with soldering then you should technically be able to replace, or simply re-solder the ports to regain functionality. Are you having any other issues with the computer besides those? If the damage has gone further into the board than the base of the USB ports then you may need to look into replacing the logic board entirely to really regain the functions. As far as your other question, there isn't a hub for ethernet or mini display as far as I'm aware. There is for newer computer that have the thunderbolt instead of mini display, but not much more than that unfortunately. From what you are describing here you damaged the USB control logic on the logic board. Replacing the USB ports them selves won't help here (unless they too are damaged by a bad USB plug). Sorry, time for that new logic board or find someone with the skills to troubleshoot the logic board and replace the damaged components. ![]() Lastly, mark your AC cords! Use a label maker to mark both the device and the AC cord unit for each device you have (correctly mated). As it gets expensive putting the wrong power unit to the device burning it and your system up! ![]() If the USB ports of your MacBook Pro keep malfunctioning, and you’ve already checked and confirmed that the USB device(s) you’re trying to connect are not the culprit, you may need to do something about the USB ports. Can i use grammarly for word on a mac. There are two ways you can fix all the problematic USB ports in a single go: • Reset System Management Controller (SMC) SMC is a chip inside your MacBook Pro that manages the components that require power to function. Resetting SMC puts the configuration of all such components to their factory defaults, thus making the non-functioning/unresponsive USB ports work properly. • Reset Non-Volatile Random Access Memory (NVRAM) or Parameter Random Access Memory (PRAM) NVRAM (or PRAM in old MacBook) stores the system settings such as date, time, screen resolution, etc. Resetting NVRAM restores these settings back to default. This resolves many MacBook issues (including malfunctioning USB ports) within a few minutes. Resetting SMC and NVRAM (PRAM) is simple. Here’s how: Reset SMC Resetting SMC requires your MacBook Pro to completely cut off from any power supply. The older MacBook Pro computers had removable battery and therefore the process of resetting SMC in them was slightly different than it is in newer MacBook Pro. To help all Mac users, resetting SMC on both types of MacBook Pro is explained below: Reset SMC on MacBook Pro without Removable Battery • Shut down your MacBook Pro Click the Apple logo from the top-left corner, click Shut Down from the menu, and click Shut Down again in the box that appears next. This shuts down your MacBook Pro. This step is not required if your MacBook Pro is already turned off. • Remove the power and devices Disconnect your MacBook Pro from the power supply, and remove all the connected devices from the USB ports.
